Using UTM parameters to track campaigns
Tag your destinations so scans show up in your analytics tools.
UTM parameters are small tags added to a URL that tell analytics tools where a visitor came from. Add them to a QR code and every scan shows up properly attributed in Google Analytics or whatever your destination site uses. UTM tracking is included with Premium and Team plans.
Adding UTM parameters to a code
- Open the code from QR Codes.
- Under Advanced Settings, click Edit.
- Fill in any of the five standard fields — blank ones are simply left off:
- Source — where the traffic comes from (e.g.
flyer,table-tent,packaging) - Medium — the general channel (e.g.
print,qr) - Campaign — the campaign name (e.g.
spring-2026) - Term and Content — optional extra detail, often used to tell variants apart
- Source — where the traffic comes from (e.g.
- Click Save changes.
The fields suggest values you've used before, so a naming convention stays consistent across codes. You can also set UTM parameters while creating a code.
How it works
When someone scans, Qbit appends your values to the destination URL as utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. The parameters live on the code — not in the printed pattern — so you can change them anytime, even after printing, and they survive destination changes.
A simple convention that works
Give every code the same medium (say, print), use source for the physical placement, and campaign for the promotion. Then your website analytics can answer both "how much traffic does print drive?" and "which placement earned it?"
UTM parameters complement Qbit's own scan analytics: scan analytics tell you about the scan, UTMs tell your destination's analytics what happened after.
